- What is a W-9 and why collect one?
- Form W-9 is how a payee gives you their legal name and Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). You collect it before paying a contractor so you can file an accurate 1099 at year end — and avoid backup withholding.
- How does requesting a W-9 work here?
- Add your payees' emails, pay per request, and we email each a secure link. They complete their W-9 in a minute — no account needed — and you get their info back, with the TIN encrypted and masked.
- Is my payee's information secure?
- Yes. The completion page is served over a one-time, unguessable link, TINs are encrypted at rest, and you only ever see a masked value (last 4). We never sell data.
- Can I then file a 1099 or run TIN matching?
- Yes — once you've collected W-9s, you can run TIN Matching to verify them against IRS records and file 1099-NEC forms, all from the same LedgerHelm File hub.
